GAIN Greyhound Nutrition and the Irish Greyhound Board are delighted to promote the suitability of greyhounds as pets in Ireland through the “Strolls to GAIN Homes” initiative. It comprises of 10 Greyhound Strolls/Walks which are taking place in locations all around the country. The “Strolls to GAIN Homes” campaign will afford members of the public the opportunity to meet and interact with greyhounds along each route and will also demonstrate to the public that greyhounds are no different from other domestic dogs and that they too make fantastic pets. We kicked off in three different locations last weekend with great attendances in Waterford, Longford and Dublin. Details of the upcoming dates, locations and photos attached.
GAIN Dog Food were honored on April 23rd in recognition of their work with Retired Racing Greyhounds at the National Greyhound Racing Awards.
It was the first time for a company to receive an honour at the annual awards. The objective of this Award is to acknowledge the massive amount of work which goes into the crucial and thankfully increasing level of rehoming of retired greyhounds across the world.
GAIN’s involvement in the welfare side of the business goes back to late 2009 when they sponsored a series of stakes across the country and on the finals night of each of these competitions, retired greyhound were paraded between races and they were judged and winners chosen.
It created an awareness of retired greyhounds being out there and the entire rehoming movement. Those initial greyhound shows developed in conjunction with the Irish Kennel Club and the National Shows were held in the IKC centre in Cloughran.
Over the past five years, hundreds of greyhounds and their owners have taken part in the events. Having initially been part of the Irish Kennel Club show structure, the events have evolved to widen their reach beyond traditional Greyhound & Show Dog communities. Events in the West, South and North have already been held in the 2015/2016 series, with the East and All Ireland events due to take place over the coming weeks.
The events also serve to provide a social outlet for owners and their retired Greyhounds to meet, something which had not formally been in place previously.
The plan going forward is that the IGB and GAIN will continue with these retired events, running them regularly as part of Agricultural Shows all over the country. It is hoped that this will demonstrate to the general public that retired greyhounds have a lovely temperament, are fantastic with kids and therefore more wonderful pets.
GAIN Dog Food Sales Manager John Fox stated: “GAIN is delighted to get this award as Greyhound welfare is extremely important to us. We recognise the importance of the correct nutrition at all stages of the greyhounds life but especially in their retired years.”
